Bulang Ethnic Costumes and Handicrafts:  The Millennia-Old Cultural Code Worn on the Body

In the mountains of the southwestern border of China, the Bulang people are weaving a unique cultural code of their ethnic group with their dexterous hands.Their attire is not merely daily necessity but a living epic of their history; their handicrafts are not only tools for livelihood but crystallizations of ethnic wisdom. From hand-spun and handwoven cloth to intricate silver ornaments, from functional bamboo weaving to distinctive dyeing and weaving techniques, Bulang dress and handicrafts form a complete cultural system.

I. Clothing: The Ethnic Aesthetics of Black and Blue

Bulang traditional clothing is dominated by black and indigo, a color preference rooted in ancient myths. According to Bulang mythology, their ancestors emerged from a scorched gourd with blackened skin; another tale recounts that they crawled out of a burned gourd’s opening, thus venerating black ever since. This preference for black is deeply imprinted in the clothing culture of the Bulang ethnic group.

Women’s clothing can be regarded as the essence of the Bulang ethnic culture:

Headwear: Women tie their hair in a bun on top of their heads, insert a legendary “three-tailed snail” silver hairpin (said to make the wearer more beautiful three times a day), and wrap a black or blue headscarf. The tassels hanging from both ends of the headpiece gently sway with each step, adding a unique charm.

Upper garment: Wear a small, round-necked embroidered vest with a front opening inside, and a narrow-sleeved short-sleeved shirt with a slanted opening over it. Tie the armpits and the hem of the shirt is in an elegant wavy shape. Young women prefer brightly colored coats, while elderly women mostly wear solemn black outerwear.

Lower garment: Wear a white petticoat inside and a double-layer tube skirt outside. The upper part of the outer skirt is woven with red, white and black stripes, while the lower part is spliced with green or black fabric and fastened tightly with a delicate silver belt. The petticoat is slightly longer than the outer skirt, revealing elaborately embroidered lace.

Accessories: Large silver ear rings hang down to the shoulders, multi-layered silver bracelets jingle, silver chains and colorful glass beads are hung around the chest, white leg bindings are wrapped around the calves, barefoot or wearing straw sandals, showing harmony with nature.

Men’s clothing is relatively simple::

  • A black round-collared short-sleeved shirt with a front opening on top and loose wide-crotch pants on the bottom.
  • Head wrapped in white, black, or indigo cloth; older men often keep the traditional topknot.
  • There is a custom of getting tattoos, where geometric patterns or scriptures are tattooed on the chest, back and limbs
  • In modern life, people mostly wear Han-style clothing, while traditional garments are only worn on important occasions

The regional characteristics have led to rich variations in the clothing of the Bulang ethnic group:

  • Xishuangbanna: Deeply influenced by Dai culture, the women’s tube skirts are similar to those of the Dai people, and they often use silver belts.
  • Shuangjiang and Shidian: More ancient and simple styles are retained, and the embroidery on the waists of Shidian women is particularly exquisite.
  • Baoshan: Women’s clothing has a strong color contrast and is called Huapuman (the Flowery Blang).

II. Textile: A Millennium of Tradition on the Waist Loom

The textile skills of the Bulang ethnic group have a long history. As early as the Han Dynasty, there were records in historical documents of the Pu people weaving “Tonghua cloth”. The “Qingboluo brocade” and “tabu” (ox stomach quilt) of the Tang and Song dynasties were renowned far and wide. To this day, the Bulang people in Bangbing Township, Shuangjiang, still preserve this traditional craft intact.

The weaving process demonstrates the wisdom of the Bulang people:

  • Cotton ginning: Wooden ginning tools remove seeds.
  • Cotton fluffing: A sheepskin-string bow loosens fibers.
  • Rolling: Cotton is rolled into strips with sticks.
  • Spinning: Hand-cranked wheels spin sturdy yarn.
  • Dyeing: Natural dyes from indigo, plum bark, and yellow flower root are used.
  • Weaving: Using ancient waist looms, skilled women can weave cloth 30 centimeters wide and 2.5 meters long every day

Specialty textiles are treasures of the Bulang ethnic culture::

  • Ox-stomach blanket (Awa Tan): It features warmth in winter and coolness in summer, and becomes whiter with each wash.
  • Kudzu cloth: Woven from wild kudzu fibers, strong and durable, used for bags and bedding.
  • Tong Pa bags: Brightly striped shoulder bags, a showcase of women’s craftsmanship.

The dyeing process embodies harmony with nature:

  • Blue: From fermented indigo leaves and stems.
  • Black: From plum bark boiled with indigo.
  • Red: From boiled plum bark juice.
  • Yellow: From crushed yellow flower roots.

These naturally dyed fabrics are soft-hued, durable, and fragrant with the essence of the earth.

III. Handicrafts: The Wisdom Transformation Bestowed by Nature

The living area of the Bulang ethnic group is rich in natural resources such as bamboo, rattan and hemp, giving rise to a wide variety of handicrafts.

Bamboo weaving craftsmanship showcases exquisite skills:

Household items: Back baskets, winnowing baskets, sieves, lunch boxes, sewing boxes.

  • Tools: Manure baskets, bamboo fences, mats.
  • Specialty craft: Basket-weaving (tiluo); a fine basket could once be bartered for a full basket of grain.
  • Process: From selecting bamboo, breaking bamboo to peeling bamboo strips and weaving, every step embodies the efforts of the artisans

Other techniques are also distinctive:

  • Tea-making: Bamboo-tube tea, sour tea.
  • Papermaking: From the bark of the Shadun tree, producing soft handmade paper.
  • Ink-making: Pine smoke mixed with animal bile.
  • Drum-making: Hive-shaped drums, elephant-foot drums.
